A common misconception conflates luxury dating introduction clubs with escort services. They’re not the same thing — and the differences matter legally, practically, and in terms of what you’re actually signing up for.

What an Escort Service Is

An escort service is a business that provides paid social or physical companionship for a fee, typically charged by the hour. The transaction is between a customer and the service; the service then provides a person. In Japan, escort services (デリヘル, hotel delivery services, etc.) operate in a specific part of the regulated adult entertainment industry.

Key characteristics: the service collects the money, directs the work, and the individual is essentially an employee or contractor fulfilling a paid service obligation.

What an Introduction Club Is

An introduction club (交際クラブ) is a membership-based matchmaking service. The club charges male members a membership fee to be introduced to female members. The club facilitates the introduction. What happens between two consenting adults after that introduction is their own private matter.

Key characteristics: the club does not direct, manage, or contract any activity between members. Female members are not employees. The club is not party to any arrangement that develops between individuals.

The Legal Difference

Escort services in Japan are regulated under the Entertainment Business Act and must be licensed. Introduction clubs are classified as introduction services (紹介所) — a different legal category that does not require an entertainment business license.

For women: participation in a licensed escort service as a worker is employment with the legal implications that carries (including visa implications for foreigners). Membership in an introduction club is not employment — it’s participation in a matchmaking introduction service.

The Practical Difference

Why the Confusion Exists

Both involve wealthy men meeting women in social contexts, and both involve financial exchanges of some kind. The surface similarity obscures a fundamental structural difference: one is employment, the other is personal relationship-building through a matchmaking introduction.
