Japan’s Fuzoku Etiquette: 10 Rules Every Foreigner Must Follow

Japan’s fuzoku industry operates on a foundation of mutual respect, cleanliness, and adherence to rules. Breaking these unwritten codes doesn’t just ruin your experience — it can get you banned, embarrass yourself, or create problems for the women who work there. Here are the 10 rules every foreign visitor must follow.

The 10 Rules

1. Shower Thoroughly Before Your Session

This is the most basic rule and the most important. Arrive clean. If the establishment has a shower (soaplands always do), use it properly. Don’t rush. Wash everything — including areas most men neglect. The woman you’re about to spend time with deserves basic hygiene.

2. Arrive Sober

Many establishments will refuse visibly intoxicated customers. Being drunk makes you unpredictable, harder to communicate with, and potentially aggressive. A drink or two is fine; stumbling in after 8 beers is not.

3. Be On Time

Japanese service industries run on precision. If your appointment is at 3:00 PM, arrive at 2:50 PM. Being late may shorten your session time — they won’t extend it because you arrived late.

4. Don’t Negotiate Prices

Prices are fixed. Attempting to haggle is considered extremely rude in Japan — in fuzoku and in every other service industry. The price on the board is the price you pay. Period.

5. No Photography or Recording

This is strictly prohibited everywhere, no exceptions. Leave your phone in the locker. Being caught with your phone out can result in police involvement. The women in these establishments have a right to complete privacy.

6. Respect Boundaries — “No” Means No

Every establishment has a service menu. If something isn’t offered, don’t push for it. If she says no to something, accept it immediately and without complaint. Aggressiveness will get you removed and banned.

7. Be Gentle and Respectful

These are professionals providing a service. Treat them with dignity — the same way you’d treat any professional in any field. Rough behavior, demanding attitudes, or treating them as objects rather than people is unacceptable.

8. Bring Sufficient Cash

Almost all fuzoku establishments are cash only. Bring the exact amount or slightly more. 7-Eleven ATMs are the most reliable for foreign cards. Don’t show up expecting to pay by credit card.

9. Don’t Tip

Tipping is not part of Japanese culture — in any industry. Attempting to tip can actually cause confusion or discomfort. The price you pay covers everything.

10. Use Protection

Reputable establishments provide condoms and require their use. This protects you, her, and her other clients. Asking to go without protection is a serious violation that will likely get you immediately removed.

Bonus: Follow Her Lead

She controls the flow of the session. She knows what she’s doing. Trying to direct, rush, or override her rhythm signals that you don’t respect her expertise. Relax, enjoy the experience, and let the professional do her work.
